A Prayer of Forgiveness

February 15, 2021

Adam R. Nettesheim

Life is too short to be consumed with anger/bitterness for wrongs done. They matter, but in the end, when we lie on our death beds, they can become loops we get stuck in and can be consuming. Let our Good Father take your hurts, your heartaches, your wounds and anger into His big, strong, just and merciful arms.
He alone can carry them and He alone should.
Forgive and Surrender. It’s ok to need help with this. It’s so, so big a thing. We cannot do it alone. Sometimes written prayers can help walk us through what our hearts don’t have the strength to on their own. After The Lord’s Prayer there is offered a prayer to help anyone walk from anger to surrender. I know I need it and will need it. God be with you all.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy Name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Lord, as You were hurt when You came down and lived as one of us, we also have been hurt in this life. We have not been loved perfectly. We have been treated with unkindness. We have experienced betrayal and heartache, and we carry such burdens that only You can bear and only You are strong enough to take and carry for us. We need Your good hands to help us to lay down our resentments, our bitterness, our anger and our pain and sorrow. You know our pain deeper than we can imagine so please take these from us, oh Lord, for You are the Father of true justice.

Lord hear our prayer.

Lord, we must also acknowledge that we ourselves have hurt You and hurt those You love too. We have not loved as we should have loved. We have failed and fallen, we have been unkind at times and we have wounded others. We acknowledge our need for Your forgiveness and mercy that You have offered to us in Your sacrificial love. We confess and repent of our sins and ask for Your forgiveness, knowing that You, oh Lord, are the Father of true mercy.

Lord hear our prayer.

Lord, we confess to Your goodness, Your love and our completeness in You, and so we surrender our hearts to You, trusting in You, Your love and Your goodness. We ask You to give us the peace that only You can give, the grace in our unknown spaces, and may Your mercy be upon us. We ask for the strength to rest our hearts in only You. We look to Your sacrifice for us and we ask that You would wash our broken hearts and souls clean in your Salvation and Love.

Lord hear our prayer.

Into Your hands we commit our spirit
May our eyes see Your salvation.
Blessed be the name of the Lord.

Now these three remain – faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.
